Jenny Bruso queer, plus-size, writer, hiker, group hike leader and founder of Unlikely Hikers. A late bloomer to the outdoors, it wasn’t until 2012 that she went on the hike that would change the course of her life from career waitress to outdoor leader and advocate for underrepresented outdoorspeople. Outside, she discovered a connection with nature, a sense of place and joyful movement. She also found outdoor culture to be often hostile to those less represented, so she set out to disrupt this through writing about her experiences, leading to the creation of Unlikely Hikers on Instagram. Unlikely Hikers aims to change the narrative of who is getting outdoors and shed a more realistic light on the everyday outdoorsperson. You’ll find people of color, people of size, queer and trans individuals and those with disabilities featured along with conversations about access, conservation and information sharing. It’s a growing community of over 79,000 people, but it’s more than just a social media platform. Jenny leads hikes all over the country! You can find her writing in many of your favorite outdoor publications.
